Canker Sores VS Cold Sores

One who has canker sores, or who is around someone who does, may worry about their spread. Thankfully you can relax because they are not contagious! However, it is easy to confuse canker sores with cold sores, which are contagious. However, unlike canker sores which are inside the mouth, cold sores are on the lips. They are caused by the herpes virus and can therefore be spread to others.

Keep in mind that canker sores will always be within your mouth- on the tongue, inside the cheeks or lips, or on the soft palate. If you have had them before, you can get them again because they are recurrent.

How Do You Get Canker Sores?

There are many factors that can contribute to your getting a canker sore. According to Dentalcare.com, “…hereditary factors, stress or tissue injury are the likely causes…Acidic or citrus foods can also trigger a canker sore, as can sharp teeth, braces or ill-fitting dentures. Cigarette smoking and allergies may also increase the likelihood of canker sores.” Further, if you are often getting canker sores, it could possibly be a sign of an underlying health issue.

If You Currently Have a Canker Sore

Don’t worry too much if you have one! Although painful, canker sores usually go away on their own within 1 to 2 weeks. Baby the area, being careful not to accidentally bite down on the area. Avoiding spicy and acidic foods and drinks will also help to avoid irritation. For severe cases, consult your dentist who can prescribe helpful ointments or oral rinses.
